I just finished reading Darkly: Black History and America’s Gothic Soul, and it left me with sense of excitement about 2024. Not necessarily because of the book’s contents, but because, in exploring what “goth(ic)” means, broadly and relative to a specifically Black experience, she talks a lot about possibility.

Four or so years into a decade–about halfway through–is when defining things for that decade begin to take shape. A new year is simply a clear marker of a new time, which, as an idea, excites me. The many possibilities. If the results are good, that’s great, if they’re bad, there’s something spectacular about watching a thing become a ruin with your very own eyes. Either way, the memes are going to be great.
